We have lived in the Grange-over-Sands area for many years and have been welcoming guests to our holiday cottage in Kents Bank since 2011.

Where is Kents Bank?
Kents Bank is a small village on the southern edge of Grange-over-Sands, in Cumbria.
It sits beside Morecambe Bay, with the Kent Estuary and the hills of Arnside and Silverdale visible across the water.
The village is also close to the historic village of Cartmel, while the southern Lake District is within easy reach.
Although Kents Bank feels quiet and rural, it is well connected. Kents Bank Railway Station is on the Furness Line, with trains running towards Lancaster and Preston in one direction and Barrow-in-Furness and the Cumbrian coast in the other.
This makes Kents Bank a particularly convenient base for a Lake District holiday.
Kents Bank and Grange-over-Sands
Kents Bank is closely associated with Grange-over-Sands, and the two are only a short distance apart.
Grange-over-Sands is a traditional Edwardian coastal town with its famous promenade, ornamental gardens, independent shops, cafés and views across Morecambe Bay.
The promenade is one of the nicest places to enjoy the bay. It provides an easy, level walk with constantly changing views as the tide comes in and goes out.
From Kents Bank, you can enjoy the best of both worlds – the peace and countryside of a small village, with Grange-over-Sands close enough for shopping, eating out and an afternoon stroll.
Morecambe Bay from Kents Bank
One of the great attractions of Kents Bank is its position beside Morecambe Bay.
The view across the bay changes throughout the day.
At low tide, the enormous expanse of sand is revealed, while at high tide the water can stretch almost to the horizon.
On a clear day, you can look across towards Arnside and Silverdale, with the hills and Lakeland fells providing a wonderful backdrop.
The bay is particularly impressive at sunrise and sunset, when the changing light can completely alter the view.
Morecambe Bay is also an important habitat for birds and other wildlife, making the area popular with walkers, photographers and birdwatchers.
Kents Bank Railway Station
For such a small village, Kents Bank has a rather useful asset – its own railway station.
Kents Bank Railway Station is situated on the Furness Line and provides a convenient way to travel to and from the area.
From the station, trains travel towards Lancaster and Preston, as well as westwards towards Barrow-in-Furness and the Cumbrian coast.
This means you can leave the car at home and still explore much of South Cumbria and beyond.
Our holiday cottage, Kents bank Holiday Cottage, is only around a five-minute walk from Kents Bank Railway Station, which is one of the reasons we often welcome guests who prefer to travel by train.
Walking from Kents Bank
Kents Bank is an excellent base for walking.
There are walks close to the village, along the coast and through the surrounding countryside, while some of the best-known walks in the area are only a short drive away.
Hampsfell
Hampsfell is one of our favourite local walks.
Rising above Grange-over-Sands and Cartmel, Hampsfell provides superb views across Morecambe Bay and the surrounding countryside.
On a clear day, the views stretch much further, taking in the Lakeland fells and the hills of the Yorkshire Dales.
The limestone landscape is also interesting in its own right, with limestone pavement and unusual plants growing in the grykes.
Humphrey Head
Humphrey Head is another fascinating place to visit.
This limestone headland projects into Morecambe Bay and has a long history, as well as interesting wildlife and coastal scenery.
It is a lovely place for a walk and gives you a different perspective of the bay.
Grange-over-Sands Promenade
For an easier walk, head into Grange-over-Sands and follow the promenade.
The level path runs alongside Morecambe Bay and is suitable for a leisurely stroll.
It is particularly enjoyable when the tide is in and the bay is full of water.
There are cafés and places to stop along the way, making it easy to combine a walk with lunch or afternoon tea.
The Cross Bay Walk from Kents Bank
Kents Bank is famous for another reason – it is the starting point for the Cross Bay Walk across Morecambe Bay to Hest Bank.
The walk follows an ancient route across the sands, but this is not an ordinary beach walk.
The sands, channels and tides of Morecambe Bay can be extremely dangerous.
The crossing should only be undertaken as part of an organised walk led by the official guide to the sands.
We have completed the Cross Bay Walk ourselves several times and it remains one of the most memorable experiences in the area.
Visit Cartmel
Just a couple of miles from Kents Bank is the beautiful medieval village of Cartmel.
Cartmel is famous for its magnificent Cartmel Priory, its racecourse and its excellent food.
The village has a good choice of pubs, cafés and restaurants, including the internationally renowned L’Enclume.
Cartmel is also a lovely place simply to wander around. Its historic buildings, narrow streets and village atmosphere make it very different from the larger Lake District towns.

Although Kents Bank itself is quiet, there is a great deal to see within a short drive.

- RSPB Leighton Moss – one of the area’s best places for birdwatching
- Windermere – England’s largest natural lake
- Coniston Water – beautiful lake and mountain scenery
- Ulverston – historic market town at the southern end of the Furness Peninsula
Kents Bank is particularly well placed if you want to explore the quieter southern part of the Lake District rather than staying in one of the busier tourist centres.
Wildlife around Kents Bank
The countryside around Kents Bank is rich in wildlife.
Morecambe Bay and the surrounding estuary attract large numbers of birds, particularly during the autumn and winter months.
Look out for curlews, oystercatchers, redshanks and other wading birds around the shoreline.
Nearby Arnside and Silverdale is also an important area for wildlife, while Leighton Moss provides another excellent opportunity for birdwatching.
For dog owners, the surrounding countryside provides plenty of opportunities for walks, although care is always needed around livestock, wildlife and the changing tides of Morecambe Bay.

Kents Bank may be small, but its location makes it a very good base for a holiday.
You can enjoy a peaceful morning beside Morecambe Bay, walk into Grange-over-Sands for lunch, visit Cartmel in the afternoon and return to the quiet of Kents Bank in the evening.
It is also a useful base for exploring the southern Lake District without having to stay in the busiest tourist areas.
For us, one of the great advantages of Kents Bank is that it still feels like a real village.
It has not lost its sense of place, and the combination of countryside, the bay, the railway and nearby Grange-over-Sands makes it a special place to stay.
