Imagine the sight of long lines of coaches, carriages, horse riders, and pedestrians, including children and dogs, venturing across the bay in the 18th century.

The route back in those days began in Lancaster to Hest Bank and then seven to nine miles over the mudflats to either Kents Bank or Cart Lane at Grange-over-Sands.

From there is extended over the land to Sandgate, near Flookburgh, where is cut across the mouth of the Leven to Sandside and Ulverston Canal Foot.
