A Journey Through History
When the tide goes out, more than 120 square miles of shimmering sands are revealed, uncovering an ancient route that has linked nearby communities for centuries.
This historic crossing was first mentioned as early as A.D. 79 by Emperor Agricola. Over time, pack donkeys, traders, and even raiding Scots made their way across these sands to reach Cartmel and beyond.
In the 18th century, it was a bustling highway of sorts—imagine long lines of coaches, horses, and families walking side by side across the bay.
The old route began in Lancaster and stretched from Hest Bank over the mudflats for about seven to nine miles, finishing either at Kents Bank or Cart Lane in Grange-over-Sands.
From there, it continued across the land to Sandgate near Flookburgh, before crossing the mouth of the River Leven toward Sandside and Ulverston Canal Foot.

Although the bay looks peaceful, it can change quickly. Shifting sands, deep channels, and fast-moving tides make this walk one that demands local expertise.
That’s why all guided Cross-Bay walks are led by the King’s Guide, an expert who knows the safest route across the ever-changing terrain.
The King’s Guide: Generations of Knowledge
The King’s Guide carefully walks the route the day before each crossing, marking the path with small branches known as “brobs,” made from laurel or rhododendron.
This tradition has been passed down since the 1500s, ensuring safety and preserving a fascinating piece of local heritage.
For decades, Cedric Robinson MBE guided thousands of walkers safely across the sands. In 2019, after 56 years of service, he handed the role to Michael Wilson, a local fisherman from Flookburgh. Now, as the 26th King’s Guide, Michael carries on this proud tradition.
From spring through summer, around 30 Morecambe Bay Cross-Bay walks take place each year, with the most popular route leading from Arnside to Kents Bank.
This remarkable journey offers not only stunning views but also a living connection to the area’s unique cultural history.
In 2019, after a remarkable 56 years of service, Cedric Robinson MBE passed the torch to Michael Wilson, a seasoned Flookburgh fisherman.
As the 26th Guide over Sands, Michael embarks on a new chapter in this time-honoured tradition.
