What Is Nine Standards Rigg?

Nine Standards Rigg takes its name from the nine beehive-shaped cairns that crown the fell — though interestingly, they don’t sit at the ridge’s actual high point, which lies closer to the trig point nearby.

Despite that, the cairns are thought to have stood in some form for over 800 years, and in 1984 they were awarded Grade II listed status in recognition of their historical significance.

Evidence suggests the group may once have numbered as many as 13 cairns, with the structures modified, rebuilt or lost over the generations.

What survives today is a row of towering, weathered stone sentinels visible for miles across the Eden Valley — and a mystery that no one has ever fully solved.

The Legends Behind the Cairns

No written record explains why the cairns were built, so theories have flourished over the centuries. Among the most enduring:

A decoy against the Scots: One popular story holds that the cairns were built to mark the boundary between the old counties of Westmorland and Yorkshire — and, more dramatically, to fool raiding Scottish armies into believing English troops were camped along the fell top.

A more elaborate version imagines each cairn as an oversized soldier, poised to stride down the hillside at the first sign of invasion.

A Roman construction: Another theory credits the Roman army with building the cairns to resemble soldiers when viewed from a distance — a deterrent to anyone eyeing the valley below.

A shepherd’s meeting point: Perhaps the most reliably documented use of the site is a practical one: for generations, shepherds gathered at the cairns to exchange stray sheep, using the landmark as a natural meeting place on an otherwise featureless fell.

A family legacy: There’s also a theory linking the cairns to the Musgrave family, principal landowners in the area until at least 1937, though like the other explanations, hard evidence is thin on the ground.

Taken together, the most likely truth is that Nine Standards Rigg has a genuinely ancient history, shaped and reshaped many times over — with the full story now lost to time.

Walking to Nine Standards Rigg

The route up to see the “nine stone men,” as they’re sometimes known, is one of the most popular walks in the area — and for good reason.

It forms part of the world-famous Coast to Coast Walk, devised by Alfred Wainwright, and the path crosses right over the summit, rewarding walkers with sweeping panoramic views across the Eden Valley.

From the centre of Kirkby Stephen — a lively agricultural town with a striking thirteenth-century church and handsome red sandstone cloisters between the churchyard and market square — the walk to the summit takes around an hour, making it an achievable outing for most reasonably fit walkers.
