Brough Castle was built in the early 11th century on the site of an old Roman fort, known as Verterae. Its strategic location was chosen to guard the Stainmore Pass, an important route through the Pennines.
The castle we see today has seen centuries of history, including attacks by Scottish raiders, a devastating fire, and careful restoration in the 17th century by Lady Anne Clifford.
Among the most remarkable figures in the history of this region, Lady Anne Clifford (1590–1676) left her mark on the landscape of Cumbria and Yorkshire through the many buildings she restored or rebuilt during her long life.
Born the only surviving child of George Clifford, Earl of Cumberland, she was denied her father’s estates simply because she was a woman, with the inheritance passing to her uncle instead.
She went on to marry two of the most powerful noblemen in England — the Earls of Dorset and Pembroke — and it was not until she was nearly sixty, when the male line finally died out, that she came into her full inheritance in Westmorland.
By then the Civil Wars had taken a heavy toll on her ancestral properties.
Castles and churches alike lay damaged or in ruins, yet Anne refused to be cowed by the Puritan authorities and threw herself into an ambitious programme of restoration.
She repaired churches at Appleby, Bolton Abbey, Brough, Kirkby Stephen, Mallerstang and Ninekirks, as well as Great Asby, where a great door lock still bears her initials A.P. — Anne, Countess of Pembroke.
Brough Castle itself was among the fortresses she reclaimed and rebuilt, alongside Skipton, Appleby, Brougham and Pendragon. At Skipton, a carved inscription records that Parliament had ordered the castle demolished after it served as a Royalist garrison — a reminder of just how much Lady Anne had to overcome to restore what was rightfully hers.
