A Sacred Site Dating Back to 674 AD

The story of Cartmel Priory begins long before the Norman Conquest. In 674 AD, King Egfrith of Northumbria conquered the Cartmel peninsula—the beautiful district bounded by the rivers Leven, Winster, and Windermere, with the sweeping shores of Morecambe Bay to the south. Following his victory, the king donated these lands to Saint Cuthbert, one of early Christianity’s most venerated figures.

Shortly after, a modest church dedicated to Saint Michael was established on this sacred ground.

Monks from the famous Holy Island of Lindisfarne travelled to this remote Lake District valley to serve the community, nurturing the Christian faith in what would become one of Cumbria’s most enduring spiritual centres.

From Royal Estates to Medieval Priory

After the Norman Conquest of 1066, Cartmel’s significance grew.

The land came under direct royal control, remaining part of the Crown’s estates for over a century.

This connection to England’s Norman kings elevated Cartmel’s status and set the stage for its transformation.

In 1188, William Marshal—the first Earl of Pembroke and one of medieval England‘s most powerful knights—founded the Augustinian priory that stands today.

Having received the Cartmel lands from King Henry II, Marshal created a religious house where monks could dedicate themselves to prayer, scholarship, and community service.

Crucially, Marshal decreed that “an altar should always be provided, with a priest, for the people of the town.”

This wise provision ensured that Cartmel would always have a functioning parish church, allowing the priory to survive even when many English monasteries were dissolved centuries later.

Light Through Old Glass

The large and beautiful east window, which almost fills the east wall at the Priory. 

It still retains 15th century stained glass, containing medieval glass fragments featuring an archbishop, the Virgin and Child and St John the Baptist, and above them are many saints inhabiting little niches.

It’s the kind of light that stops visitors mid-step, and few have captured it as movingly as poet Geraldine Green in her poem Stained Glass, Cartmel Priory:

“Strange, walking not on water but on remains and still the tree’s light comes through old glass watering me under and are the patterns on the glass the branching architecture mimicking of the forest are the leaves diamond-paned shadows…”

Standing beneath that east window, it’s easy to see exactly what Green means—the stone tracery echoing branches, the coloured light pooling on the flagstones like leaf-shadow on a woodland floor.

Nine hundred years of worship, and still the glass finds new ways to move people.

Best-selling travel writer Bill Bryson has named Cartmel Priory among his favourite churches in England, bringing well-deserved attention to this Lake District treasure.

“I came across this ancient and memorable priory by accident years ago when I was exploring the Lake District,” Mr Bryson explained. “Cartmel is a lovely village, so it and its church were both delightful surprises, and I have returned several times since.”

He particularly admires the church’s distinctive architectural feature: “The church dominates the village and is notable for its unusual diagonal belfry tower, which gives it a jaunty air.”

A Living Church: Recent Royal Visit

Cartmel Priory continues to thrive as both an active parish church and a cherished historical landmark.

On December 13, 2025, during the Advent season, His Eminence Archbishop Angaelos OBE, Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of London and Papal Legate to the United Kingdom, visited the priory.

Invited by the Reverend Nick Devenish, Archbishop Angaelos delivered a moving address focusing on:

• Faith Through Hardship: Speaking candidly about the “burdens and blessings” of Christian faith, particularly addressing religious persecution
• The Example of Christ: Encouraging the congregation to find strength in Christ’s incarnation and his model of wisdom despite humble origins
• The Coptic Witness: Drawing from centuries of Coptic Orthodox tradition to remind worshippers that God works through us

Following the service, the Archbishop graciously met with members of the local congregation during a reception, creating a memorable evening that bridged ancient and modern expressions of Christian faith.
