Slater’s Bridge – A Step Back in Time
One of Little Langdale’s best-known sights is Slater’s Bridge. This old stone packhorse bridge dates back to the 1600s. It was built so slate workers could carry stone across the valley.
The bridge curves across the river in several arches, using large slate slabs. It is still strong today and makes a lovely spot for photos.
In autumn, the colours around the bridge are especially beautiful. Moss, trees, rock, and water all meet in one quiet corner of the Lake District.
A short walk from the roadside brings you to the bridge, making it ideal for all ages.
Cathedral Cavern – A Hidden Wonder
Not far from Slater’s Bridge is Cathedral Cavern (also known as Cathedral Quarry). This huge man-made cave was carved out long ago by slate workers.
Inside, the roof rises high above you, like the inside of a church.
Light pours in from openings above, and water drips down the rock walls. It is cool, echoing, and unforgettable. Children love it. Adults do too.
The walk to Cathedral Cavern is relatively straightforward, but the ground around the quarry can be uneven and slippery. Good shoes are advised, especially after rain.
