Originally, the Haverthwaite line operated as a branch line of the Furness Railway, facilitating the transportation of goods and passengers from Ulverston.
The former industrial line once carried timber and iron out of the Lakeland hills.
It allowed for seamless connections with the Windermere steamers at Lakeside.
Around 1850, four-passenger steamers were introduced, followed by the commencement of train services 20 years later.
Although passenger numbers peaked before World War I, they sadly declined after the war, leading to the eventual closure of passenger services on the line.
However, a determined group of enthusiasts came forward to purchase the branch line with the vision of reopening it as a recreational line, specifically operating steam trains.
Despite facing numerous setbacks, their unwavering efforts paid off, and they successfully acquired and reopened the 3.5-mile stretch of line connecting Haverthwaite and Lakeside.
A moment of pride arrived in 1973 when the line was officially reopened.
Since then, a full-fledged service has been consistently maintained.
Similar to the railway’s heyday, travellers can still enjoy the picturesque journey along with a leisurely cruise on Windermere.
