Best Short Walks in the Lake District: Scout Scar

Scout Scar, near Kendal, offers one of the Lake District’s most accessible and rewarding walks. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or simply seeking a gentle stroll with breathtaking views, Scout Scar is a must-visit destination during your stay in Cumbria.

If you’re staying at our holiday cottage in Grange-over-Sands, Kents Bank Holiday, Scout Scar is a perfect day trip, offering a blend of natural beauty, history, and tranquillity.

What Makes Scout Scar Special?

Scout Scar is a long limestone escarpment that stretches west of Kendal. Its unique geology creates a dramatic edge with sweeping panoramas across the Lake District fells and, on a clear day, as far as Morecambe Bay.

The walk is renowned for its accessibility, making it suitable for families, casual walkers, and those looking for a less strenuous adventure

How to Get There

Scout Scar is easy to reach from Kendal. From the town, follow the Underbarrow Road for about a mile and a half. Look out for the Scout Scar car park on the right, just past a large aerial mast and a previous car park (Cunswick Car Park).

Parking here is free, although donations are appreciated to help with upkeep. If you’re based at our self-catering cottage in Grange-over-Sands, the drive to Scout Scar takes around 40 minutes, making it an ideal half-day excursion.

The Walk – Gentle, Scenic, and Rewarding

The classic Scout Scar walk is a circular route of approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km), with only 40 metres of gentle ascent. The path is well-trodden and mostly flat, making it accessible for most fitness levels.

After leaving the car park, a short climb brings you onto the Scar, where the landscape opens up to reveal stunning vistas almost immediately.

As you follow the path along the edge, you’ll enjoy uninterrupted views of the Lakeland hills.

Peaks visible from here include Coniston Old Man, Scafell Pike, Bowfell, Langdale Pikes, Fairfield, and many more. The route can be extended for those seeking a longer adventure, with options to continue towards Burnbarrow Scar or even start your walk from Kendal town centre.

The Mushroom Shelter

One of Scout Scar’s most iconic features is the “mushroom” shelter, a unique, domed structure built in 1912 as a memorial to King George V.

This historic shelter is a welcome resting spot and features a toposcope—a circular indicator that helps you identify the surrounding peaks and landmarks.

While the original markings have faded over time, the shelter remains a beloved landmark and a perfect place to pause, take in the views, and snap some memorable photos

“This rather curious shelter was built in 1912 as a memorial to King George V and restored in 1969 and again in 2003. The structure includes a toposcope indicating the Central Fells and other landmarks.”

The View

The summit of Scout Scar is all about the views. From the edge, you can gaze north and west to the dramatic skyline of the Lake District fells, while to the south, the landscape opens out towards the Howgills and even Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales on a clear day. To the west, the glinting expanse of Morecambe Bay is visible, connecting the mountains to the sea.
