Best of Beautiful Bouth:

Bouth is a small village situated in the Furness Fells. It was once famous for its woodland industries.

Years ago, after farming, coppice products supplied wood bobbins, barrel hoops, staves, and ship fenders. In fact, nearby at Spark Bridge and Stott Park, the trade of bobbin making continued for generations.

Oak bark was used for tanning leather and Bouth still has a Bark House to this day. A few kiln cottages survive here too. Close to Bouth horses were kept to pull the coppice wood up the hill. The hill is still called Horse Hill.

Bouth was at one time known as the capital of Colton. It has a very attractive village green and has for many years won the coveted โ€˜Best Kept Village In South Lakelandโ€™.

Adjacent to the village green stands the White Hart with its unusual inn sign.

At one time the White Hart, Bouth, would have been an important coach stop.

Today, tourism brings visitors into the area with the Black Beck Caravan Park being a popular site for visitors.

One interesting fact about Bouth is that on July 12th, 1943 rock singer Christine McVie, the rock singer/songwriter, from Fleetwood Mac was born in the village. She wrote some of the band’s famous songs, including Don’t Stop, Little lies and Songbird.

Christine died on November 30th 2022.
