Discover Stock Ghyll Force: Ambleside’s Hidden Waterfall Walk

Stock Ghyll Force Walk, Ambleside | Easy Waterfall Walk

Stock Ghyll Force Walk, Ambleside | Easy Waterfall Walk & Where to Stay

The Stock Ghyll Force walk is one of Ambleside’s most rewarding short walks, combining woodland paths, industrial history, and a dramatic Lakeland waterfall. Best of all, it starts just a few minutes from the centre of town, making it ideal for families, dog walkers, and anyone looking for an easy introduction to walking in the Lake District.

I last walked this route in autumn, when the woodland was alive with colour and the ghyll ran strong after rainfall — one of the best times to see the falls at their most impressive.

Where the Walk Starts

The walk begins just past the Salutation Hotel on Stockdale Lane in Ambleside. Clear signposts lead you up the lane and into the woods, where the sound of rushing water quickly replaces the noise of the town.

Stock Ghyll (sometimes written as Stock Gill) is a tributary of the River Rothay, which eventually flows into Windermere. From the outset, the path follows the ghyll closely, climbing steadily through mixed woodland.

A Walk Shaped by Water and Industry

This is more than a scenic stroll. For centuries, the power of Stock Ghyll shaped Ambleside into a busy industrial centre long before tourism arrived.

By the 10th century, Irish Norse settlers had established farmsteads on the rocky hillsides above the old Roman settlements. From the 14th century onwards, their descendants used the fast-flowing water to grind grain, then to wash, full, and weave wool.
The first mill was established in 1335, with the last closing in 1793.

Later, coppiced woodland supplied bark for tanning leather, while the mills produced millions of wooden bobbins for the Lancashire cotton industry. As you walk, look closely and you’ll still spot traces of stonework and old mill features hidden among the trees.

The Path to Stock Ghyll Force

The footpath is clear and easy to follow, although it climbs steadily and can feel surprisingly wild for a walk so close to town. Several viewpoints along the way provide natural stopping points, allowing you to take your time and enjoy the sound and movement of the water.

After rain, care is needed underfoot. Muddy patches, exposed tree roots, and fallen branches are common, particularly in autumn and winter. Extra caution is also needed near edges when stopping to look into the ghyll or towards the waterfall.

Stock Ghyll Force Waterfall

At the top of the route, Stock Ghyll Force drops through the trees in a powerful cascade, especially impressive after wet weather.

Picnic benches nearby make this a good place to pause, rest, and enjoy the woodland setting.

Route Options and Refreshments

From the waterfall, you can either:

  • Retrace your steps back down alongside the ghyll, or

  • Take the circular return through the woods, passing old metal turnstile gates before rejoining Stockdale Lane.

Turning right leads you back downhill towards Ambleside.

A stop at the Force Café & Terrace is well worth considering, not only for refreshments but also for its open views over Ambleside, which add a fitting end to the walk.

A Good Walk to Pair with a Coastal Stay

If you’re staying slightly further south, this walk pairs well with a quieter base outside the busier central Lakes. Kents Bank Holiday Cottage in Grange-over-Sands makes a good base for exploring both the southern Lake District and coastal Cumbria, with Ambleside an easy day trip for classic walks such as Stock Ghyll Force.

Why I Recommend This Walk

For first-time visitors and families, this is often one of the best introductory walks in the Lake District. It’s close to town, rich in history, and rewarding without being demanding. It also works well on days when higher routes feel exposed or weather conditions are changeable.

Simple, atmospheric, and rooted in Ambleside’s working past, the Stock Ghyll Force walk shows how much character can be found on a short Lakeland walk.
