A History of Elegance and Inspiration
Built in 1840 by Dr James Dawson, a retired surgeon, Wray Castle was designed to impress with its fairytale towers and lofty halls.

The castle and its extensive grounds were donated to the National Trust in 1929.

Wray Castle Windermere

Interestingly, Wray Castle held a special place in the heart of Beatrix Potter, the beloved children’s author.

She also met Hardwicke Rawnsley at a dinner party held by her parents at Wray Castle. He was one of three founders of the National Trust in 1895.

Rawnsley had moved to Cumbria 20 years earlier, aged 26, to be vicar at Wray Church, on the Wray Castle estate.

It was here that she first discovered the beauty of the Lake District during her family holidays.

Inspired by her experiences, Beatrix later purchased her own farm at Hill Top, where she wrote many of her classic tales.

In 1929, Wray Castle was given to the national trust by Sir Robert Norton Barclay and has been used for various purposes including as a youth hostel, office for the Freshwater Biological Association and as a Merchant Navy Training college from 1958-1998.
