The Topiary Gardens and Levens Hall:
Levens Hall is situated just off the A6 near Levens village and two miles south of Sizergh Castle.
The hall is the private residence of the Bagot family, who have lived here for two centuries.
Visitors can wander through some of the magnificent rooms, viewing fine furniture, paintings and excellent Spanish leather wall covering and oak panelling.
The hall (with pele-tower) is the largest Elizabethan house in the Lake District.
The Grade I listed topiary gardens are world-famous in their own right and are a must for any gardener visiting the area.
Dating from 1694, the gardens were designed by Guillaume Beaumont, one of the top gardeners of this era.
Additionally, the immaculate yew topiary, which has to be seen to be believed, is some of the oldest in the country.
The hall has a fascinating history including once being gambled away in a game of cards.
