The Borrowdale Valley

The Borrowdale Valley

The Borrowdale Valley:

The Borrowdale Valley sits conveniently between the fells of the Lake District in northwest England.

The wild exposed moorland above the Borrowdale and Bretherdale valleys link Cumbria High Fells to the Howgill Fells.

Nowhere else in England do two National Parks (the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales) lie so closely together, giving a vast tract of Upland countryside.

Alfred Wainwright once said ” Borrowdale is the finest valley in the former county of Westmorland outside the Lake District National Park.”

This green and fertile valley remains relatively unknown compared to its more famous neighbours like Langdale and Wasdale.

Yet with its gushing streams, patchwork of fields, and timeless charm, Borrowdale has much to offer visitors looking to escape the crowds.

The valley follows the path of the River Borrow as it winds its way northwards. Sheep graze contentedly on the valley’s grassy slopes, while swathes of oak, ash and rowan trees lend patches of colour to the landscape.

Quintessential stone barns and farmhouses dot the countryside, looking as if they have stood for centuries.

The Borrowdale Valley

The scattered hamlet of Bretherdale, with its many derelict farm buildings, has a pastoral charm of its own.

The fells around here are a mosaic of habitats from rough grasslands to blanket peat all supporting a variety of animals and birds.

Today, The Friends of the Lake District own land in the valley where they are involved in tree planting and hay meadow creation.

There are numerous public footpaths that allow walkers to easily explore the valley floor and ascend the fells on either side for panoramic views.

Whether walking, cycling, or driving through the countryside, the Borrowdale Valley rewards visitors with its vision of rural England at its finest. Its peaceful charm and variety of landscapes from north to south mean Borrowdale can justly take its place among the most loved valleys of the Lake District.
