Stagshaw Gardens – A Hidden Gem

Stagshaw Gardens – A Hidden Gem:

Stagshaw Gardens nestles in the heart of the Lake District.  The gardens are a hidden gem that is often overlooked by visitors to the area.

The gardens sit on a hillside near Ambleside and were created by Cubby Acland, a former regional agent for the National Trust. He lived at Stagshaw and a member of Royal Windermere Yacht Club.

The history of Stagshaw Gardens dates back to the early 19th century, when it was part of the wider Ambleside estate. Over the years, the garden fell into disrepair until it was purchased by the National Trust in 1959.

Cubby Acland set out to transform this small part of Skelghyll Woods into an 8-acre garden. He was both a gardener and forester. Cubby had the talent and vision to create a subtle balance of rare and colourful plants intermingled with fine trees.

Today, the garden has been carefully restored to its former glory, and today it is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the Lake District.

One of the most striking features of Stagshaw Gardens is its delightful examples of rhododendrons and azaleas.

Visitors can wander around the garden and surrounding ancient woodland which boasts a cascading stream crossed by a wooden footbridge.

There are over 300 rhododendrons and azaleas across the garden including many old and unusual specimens.
