Rheged Centre

Rheged Discovery Centre

The Rheged Discovery Centre is a great Lake District attraction, especially on a wet day.

Heading west from Penrith, located at the Penrith/Gateway to the Lakes – Redhills site, just off the M6 near Penrith (J40).

Sited in a disused limestone quarry, the centre is billed as Europe’s largest earth-covered building.

Built on a green field site over 20 years ago, the building was modern at the time.

Rheged is built under road level with lots of glazing and a green grass roof designed to blend in with the surrounding fells.

Cumbria’s largest visitor complex hosts a giant 3D cinema, art gallery, shops, cafes, conferences and regular family activities and special events throughout the year.

Recently reopened after the pandemic, the centre has been revamped to take into account evolving customer needs and changing times.

When the centre first opened it was the place to meet socially or visit the cinema, gallery and shops.

Today, customers’ needs are different as people want to have a space to use their laptops, with good wi-fi and where they can grab some lunch and maybe do some shopping.

To conclude, Rheged has just reached its twentieth anniversary and has been redesigned with new interiors.

As a consequence, it has a new perspective on how it can support the shifting demands of working people on the move.

Parking is free of charge for visitors to Rheged.
