Moss Eccles Tarn

Moss Eccles Tarn

Moss Eccles Tarn:

Moss Eccles Tarn nestles in the beautiful Lake District National Park in Cumbria.

The tarn is a hidden gem and is well worth a visit for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. This tranquil tarn is located near the village of Near Sawrey, just a short distance from the better-known Lake Windermere.

Moss Eccles Tarn is a small, natural lake that was created during the last Ice Age and has since become a popular spot for fishing, picnicking, and enjoying the stunning scenery.

The tarn was bought by Beatrix Potter in 1913, the same year she married William Heelis. It became a favourite place for them to spend time in the evenings where they kept a boat.

The heavy boat was double-bowed so that you could row in either direction and flat-bottomed for the shallow waters.

Beatrix and William planted one red water lily and one white water lily in the shallow waters.

The famous English children’s author and illustrator was known to visit the tarn often before her marriage when she lived at Hill Top Farm, which is located nearby.

She drew inspiration from the lake and its surroundings for some of her beloved tales, including “The Tale of Jeremy Fisher” and “The Tale of Mr. Tod.”

The tarn is surrounded by beautiful woodland, making it an excellent spot for nature walks and bird watching. Visitors can explore the nearby countryside around Claife Heights on foot or by bike, taking in the stunning views of the fells and valleys that make up the Lake District.

The tarn itself is home to a variety of fish, including trout, and is a popular spot for fishing enthusiasts.

In summary, Moss Eccles Tarn is a special place for wildlife and forms part of the Claife Tarns and Mires, Site of Scientific interest.

It is valued in particular for the wide range of aquatic and wetland plants.

It is now owned by the National Trust.
