Grange Hotel: The Grand Old Lady of Grange-over-Sands
Grange Hotel in Grange-over-Sands is a classic Victorian railway hotel, built in 1866 to serve the new Furness Railway and the growing seaside resort on the shores of Morecambe Bay.
Its elevated position above the station and ornamental gardens quickly made it a landmark for well-to-do visitors escaping the industrial cities of Lancashire and Yorkshire for clean air and sea views.
Victorian beginnings
In the 1850s, the Ulverston and Lancaster Railway opened up this quiet fishing village, transforming Grange-over-Sands into a fashionable “watering place” known for sea bathing and a gentle climate.
To meet demand from rail travellers, the Furness Railway Company commissioned architect E. G. Paley to design Grange Hotel, which was completed in 1866 as a grand stone building overlooking the new station and landscaped gardens on former marshland.
Growth as a resort
Through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Grange-over-Sands developed promenades, ornamental gardens and hydropathic establishments, reinforcing the hotel’s role as a base for health and leisure breaks.
Wealthy mill and factory owners from Lancashire and Yorkshire could reach the town in just a few hours by train, and the Grange Hotel became a convenient base for bay views, sea air and excursions into the southern Lake District.
From the twentieth century to today
By Edwardian times, the town was being promoted as the “Torquay of the North”, and the hotel benefited from the new mile-long promenade, nearby lido and expanding villa-lined streets.
In 1975, the building was granted Grade II listed status, recognising its special architectural and historic interest and helping to protect its distinctive Victorian character.
Modern Grange Hotel
Today, Grange Hotel is a four-star property that blends original Victorian features with modern comforts, attracting guests looking for a peaceful coastal base close to Lake Windermere and the Lake District National Park.
Its history as a railway hotel, its protected listed status and its position above the station and gardens all help it rank as one of the most characterful places to stay in Grange-over-Sands.
Recent Upgrades and Modern Improvements
In 2025, Grange Hotel embarked on a multi-million-pound refurbishment, breathing new life into this historic property while carefully preserving its iconic Victorian façade and character.
The ambitious project saw the transformation of the hotel’s interiors, elevating comfort and style for all guests.
The hotel now offers 56 beautifully renovated bedrooms, including dedicated family and dog-friendly rooms, plus two stunning penthouse suites.
Notably, the Sable D’Or suite features a spacious roll-top bathtub and a private balcony with panoramic views, while the Clair de Lune suite overlooks tranquil woodland from its own balcony.
Communal areas and event spaces have also been revamped, with private function rooms now available for weddings, conferences, and celebrations of up to 200 guests.
The enhanced wellness facilities—inclusive of a pool, sauna, jacuzzi, steam room, and spa treatment rooms—invite guests and members to relax and rejuvenate in luxury.
General Manager Sam Gombos summed up the improvements: “Our vision was to respect the hotel’s Edwardian heritage while creating a destination that feels both timeless and future-facing.”
The refreshed Grange Hotel continues its legacy as Grange-over-Sands’ most characterful place to stay, now seamlessly blending old-world charm with modern luxury for memorable coastal escapes.
