Best time to visit the Lake District
The Lake District National Park is world-famous for its lakes, fells and charming villages. But with that fame comes crowds – especially in places like Bowness-on-Windermere, Ambleside and Keswick during peak seasons.
Many visitors staying at Kents Bank Holiday Cottage quickly discover there’s another side to the Lake District – one that’s quieter, slower paced and every bit as beautiful.
Guests often tell us that while they enjoyed visiting the famous towns, they were surprised by just how crowded they can be. Streets packed with visitors and the challenge of finding a car parking space can sometimes take the shine off the experience.
That’s why so many of our guests say they appreciate returning to the calm of Grange-over-Sands and Kents Bank at the end of the day – peaceful places where you can relax, park easily (sometimes even for free), and explore at a gentler pace.
When to Visit the Lake District for Fewer Crowds
From experience, weekends throughout the year tend to be the busiest times in the central Lake District. Places like Bowness-on-Windermere are rarely quiet – even in winter.
While the scenery is beautiful, it’s also the area we feel can become the most overcrowded.
For a more peaceful experience, consider the quieter months in the table below:
| Month | Crowd Level | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| January | 🟢 Very Quiet | Peaceful landscapes, cold but clear days possible |
| February | 🟢 Very Quiet | Half-term week can be busier — worth checking dates |
| March | 🟢 Quiet | Quieter early in the month; Easter can bring more visitors |
| April | 🟡 Moderate | Easter holidays bring a noticeable increase in visitors |
| May | 🟡 Moderate | Bank holidays are busy; mid-week visits recommended |
| June | 🟡 Moderate | Busy at weekends; quieter mid-week |
| July | 🔴 Busy | School holidays begin; central Lakes very busy |
| August | 🔴 Very Busy | Peak season — busiest month across the whole area |
| September | 🟡 Moderate | Crowds ease after schools return; often lovely weather |
| October | 🟡 Moderate | Half-term week is busy; otherwise quieter |
| November | 🟢 Quiet | Far fewer visitors; great for peaceful walking |
| December | 🟢 Quiet | Quiet outside Christmas week; atmospheric winter scenery |
For the most relaxed experience, January to March and November offer the quietest roads and the fewest visitors — and the landscape in winter has a beauty all of its own.
Grange-over-Sands: A Relaxed Coastal Alternative
Just minutes from our holiday cottage, Grange-over-Sands offers a completely different atmosphere from the busy lakefront towns.
Instead of crowded streets, you’ll find wide open views across Morecambe Bay, level walks and a traditional seaside charm that hasn’t changed much over the years.
One of our favourite short walks is the gentle stroll from Kents Bank into Grange. The walk takes about 40 minutes and follows the edge of the bay before joining the famous promenade.
It’s an easy route with wonderful coastal views and plenty of spots to pause and take in the scenery.
A lovely place to stop once you arrive is the town’s ornamental gardens, where you’ll find a duck pond and peaceful green spaces – perfect for sitting quietly or feeding the ducks.
Hampsfell: One of the Best Views in the Southern Lakes
If you enjoy a short climb with a spectacular reward, head up to Hampsfell above Grange.
At the top you’ll find a stone hospice shelter and one of the finest viewpoints in the area. From here you can enjoy 360-degree views stretching across Morecambe Bay and northwards towards the mountains of the Lake District.
In our opinion, the best times to visit are sunrise and sunset, when the light across the bay is truly magical and the landscape seems to glow.
Cartmel: Historic Village Charm
A short drive away lies the historic village of Cartmel, famous for its medieval streets, ancient priory and outstanding food.
It’s a wonderful place to wander, browse independent shops and perhaps try the village’s famous sticky toffee pudding.
However, one important tip from local experience: avoid visiting on race days at Cartmel Racecourse. The race meetings attract more than 20,000 visitors, and the peaceful village quickly becomes extremely busy.
Visit on a quieter day and you’ll see why Cartmel is considered one of the most charming villages in the area.
Witherslack and Whitbarrow Scar: Walking Without the Crowds
If you enjoy walking but prefer quieter paths, the countryside around Witherslack is well worth exploring.
One of the best spots is Whitbarrow Scar, a limestone ridge offering wonderful views and far fewer walkers than many of the more famous Lakeland fells.
After a walk, many visitors like to stop at the nearby Derby Arms, a welcoming local pub known for its good food and drink.
Enjoy the Famous Places – Then Return to Peace and Quiet
Of course, the well-known towns of the Lake District are popular for good reason. A visit to Lake Windermere, a wander around Ambleside or a day exploring Keswick can all be wonderful experiences.
But many visitors find the best approach is to enjoy the famous places for a few hours, then return somewhere quieter for the rest of the day.
That’s exactly what staying at Lotthlorien Holiday Cottage allows you to do.
