Ambleside’s Gem: The Golden Rule
If you’re on the hunt for a pub that oozes charm, has a warm embrace, and offers a taste of the real Lake District, then you’ve struck gold – literally!
The Golden Rule Pub holds a rich history that dates back to the mid-19th century. Originally established in 1859, the pub has been a beloved watering hole for locals and visitors alike for over a century.
The Golden Rule pub is now the only English pub to bear this name and one of only three pubs in the United Kingdom.
There are many stories as to where the name came from, some which are very nice stories of the’golden rule’ of not being permitted to open on a Sunday, but there is very little evidence as to any of them being true.
Another theory for the Golden Rule is ‘Do as you would be done by’. In the letter books of Joseph Sympson of Kendal, he refers to the golden rule of business: ‘As we would deal honourably by all mankind, we would be honourably dealt with’.
The Golden Rule is situated on Smithy Brow in Ambleside, which, for many cyclists, is the start of the notoriously steep climb known as ‘The Struggle’. The road is the shortest route from Ambleside to Kirkstone Pass.
Its traditional stone facade, wooden interiors, and cosy atmosphere hark back to a bygone era, making it a truly authentic experience for those seeking a taste of old-world charm.
It’s a place where you can unwind after a day of exploring the breathtaking scenery of the Lake District, strike up a conversation with friendly locals, and try some of the finest ales the region has to offer.
In fact, the Golden Rule is a beer lover’s paradise! They’ve got an impressive lineup of real ales on tap – some local gems and regional beauties that’ll make your taste buds do a happy dance.
