The Ancient White House Of Townend

Townend

Townend is a 17th-century farmhouse in the Lake District village of Troutbeck. It was home to the Browne family for over 400 years, and is now owned and cared for by the National Trust.

The farmhouse is a traditional Lake District building, made of stone and slate with round chimneys. Inside, it is full of original features, including a flagstone floor, beamed ceilings, and a working open fire in the kitchen.

The property has been passed down through eleven generations of the Browne family.

Since 1947, the house has been owned by the National Trust.

Townend

Incidentally, Townend was a property Beatrix Potter was very much attracted to but never owned.

She would though be pleased to know that today it is in the hands of the National Trust.

The house was divided into two sections, one for living and one for work.

Furthermore, it still retains much of its original oak furniture, books, papers, and fascinating domestic implements largely accumulated by its former owners, the Browne family.

One of the most interesting things about Townend is the collection of intricately carved furniture.

Townend

This was made by the last George Browne to live at Townend, who was a sheep and dairy farmer, gardener, and keen wood carver. George’s passion for the craft is evident in the furniture, which is beautifully decorated with scenes from nature and everyday life.

Another highlight of a visit to Townend is the garden. This was once a working farm garden, but today it is a place to relax and enjoy the stunning scenery. The garden is full of flowers, vegetables, and herbs, and there is a seating area where you can enjoy a picnic or simply take in the views.

If you are looking for a step back in time, Townend is the perfect place to visit. The farmhouse and garden offer a unique glimpse into life in the Lake District in the past.

For guests staying at Kents Bank holiday cottage, Townend is an ideal half-day visit.
