Rose Castle is a medieval castle located in the village of Dalston, Cumbria, England.

Its situation is extremely pleasant, on the gently rising ground, commanding an extensive prospect, whilst immediately in front is a broad expanse of meadow, bounded by the wooded bank of the river Caldew.

Rose Castle was built in the 13th century and was the official residence of the bishops of Carlisle for over 700 years

In 1300 Edward I stayed here.

Rose Castle is just outside Dalston in the north of the county and is about to be converted into an international Christian centre for reconciliation.

The cost of the work to change the use of this Grade I listed building is estimated at £5million.

The castle has been home to 63 bishops of Carlisle from 1230 to 2009. The last Bishop was Graham Dow, who left in 2009.

In 2011, the Church Commissioners decided that it was no longer fit for purpose and should be sold.

Both he Wordsworths and Coleridge visited the castle in 1803.
