Bigland Tarn is situated on the Bigland Estate.

Tucked away and out of view is Bigland Hall – a large Grade II country house.

Bigland Hall is the ancient seat of the Bigland family.

The Biglands have occupied the hall from at least Norman times; the house is now thought to be the oldest in England still inhabited by the original family.

It has 33 rooms and is part Georgian, but in the old kitchen traces of fireplaces of five different periods – as well as an open spit – have been discovered.

The oldest has a beam bearing the date 1166; if this is correct it means that Bigland Hall is 22 years older than Cartmel Priory.

It is therefore the most ancient building in the district.

Family activities at Bigland Hall include horse riding (including lessons) and pony trekking from the Bigland Hall Equine Group.
