Beyond Scenic Views – Windermere Hotel
One of Windermere’s most imposing buildings is the Windermere Hotel, originally known as Rigg’s Windermere Hotel.
The hotel was the first in Windermere and opened at the same time as the railway arrived in the town.
This listed building was built in 1847 by Abraham Pattinson to attract visitors from the newly opened railway nearby.
Richard Rigg was the first proprietor and coach operator; his ‘four-in-hand’ coaches travelled over Dunmail Raise to Keswick.
Richard Rigg ran the Windermere Hotel, and John Rigg the Mail and Coach Office at Windermere station.
The Rigg family originated from Middleton near Kirkby Lonsdale and were made wealthy by the holiday coach and hotel business, which they entered as the railways expanded the holiday trade.
The Windermere Hotel stands as a testament to the golden age of Lakeland tourism.
Its grand architecture, built from local Lakeland slate, whispers tales of bygone eras when steamboats plied the lake and literary giants like Wordsworth sought inspiration in the surrounding fells.
Stepping into the hotel’s elegant lobby is like stepping back in time, with its ornate fireplace, antique furnishings, and warm, inviting atmosphere.
Where Comfort Meets Character
The Windermere Hotel offers a haven of comfort and character, with 75 tastefully appointed rooms catering to every kind of traveller.
Some rooms even grace you with spellbinding views of the lake, painting a watercolour masterpiece right outside your window.
