A Thirlmere Guide 2023: Thirlmere is a man-made lake located in the heart of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England.
It was created in the late 19th century to provide a reliable source of water for the city of Manchester, which was experiencing rapid industrial growth at the time.
The lake is named after the village of Thirlmere, which was submerged when the lake was created.
The lake, which is a few miles away from Grasmere, was created by damming two streams, which resulted in the displacement of several local communities including Amboth and Wythburn and the flooding of ancient woodland.
Today, there are just a few cottages that still remain at the southern end.
The lake is 4 miles long and 2 miles across with a depth of 158 feet when it is full.
The controversial dam has a commemorative stone bearing the date the work began 22 August 1890. At the time, Ruskin, although in favour of social reform, wasn’t impressed by the plan to provide Manchester with drinking water at the expense of two villages and a valley.
Additionally, the water level of the lake has fluctuated over the years due to a combination of natural and man-made factors.
Thirlmere is a popular destination for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts, who come to enjoy the stunning scenery and engage in a variety of recreational activities such as hiking and cycling.
