Windermere’s Oldest Steamer

Windermere’s Oldest Steamer

Windermere’s Oldest Steamer is the MV Tern. To this day, it is the oldest working steamer out of the seventeen vessels of Windermere Lake Cruises’ fleet.

The ship was built in 1891 and has been operating on the lake for over 120 years.

Furthermore, it is included on the National Historic Ships Register.

Commissioned by the Furness Railway Company, Tern was built for £4,000 by Forest & Sons of Wyvenhoe, Essex.

It was shipped in sections by rail to Lakeside and assembled there in May and June of that year, before launch in the last week of June.
