Lancaster's Coastal Canal

Lancaster’s Coastal Canal

Lancaster’s Coastal Canal:

Lancaster’s Coastal Canal is one of the country’s few coastal canals, winding its way through the beautiful countryside of Lancashire and Cumbria. It’s a popular destination for boaters, walkers, and cyclists, and offers a chance to experience some of the best that the region has to offer.

The canal was built in the early 1800s to transport goods between Preston and Kendal, but it’s now a much-loved leisure spot. The towpath is ideal for walking and cycling, and there are plenty of places to stop for a picnic or a drink along the way.

It was opened in Kendal in 1819.

One of the highlights of the canal is the Lune Aqueduct, which carries the canal over the River Lune at Lancaster. It’s a magnificent structure, designed by the renowned engineer John Rennie.

Another popular spot is the Glasson Branch of the canal, which leads to the village of Glasson. This is a great place to start a walk or cycle ride along the coast or to take a boat trip out to sea.

The canal is also home to a variety of wildlife, including kingfishers, herons, and otters. So keep your eyes peeled as you explore, and you might just catch a glimpse of some of these amazing creatures.

If you fancy a short trip on the canal, Waterwitch  is a 28-foot narrowboat based at Crooklands near Kendal.

Waterwitch offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the Lancaster Canal. The narrowboat is crewed by experienced volunteers who are passionate about the canal and its history.

A trip on the Waterwitch is a relaxing and informative way to see the canal. The barge travels at a leisurely pace, giving passengers plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and the wildlife.

It is run by the Lancaster Canal Trust.
