Esthwaite Water – Lake for Sale:
An interesting story in the news this week is that Esthwaite Water at Near Sawrey has been put up for sale.
This small and relatively shallow lake is found to the south of Hawkshead in the English Lake District.
The reason for the sale is the owner – Nigel Woodhouse is fast approaching retirement age.
Mr Woodhouse is looking out for someone to take over the reins of the 280-acre lake.
Esthwaite Water is the biggest trout fishery in North West England.
The fishery organizes day-long fly fishing courses or you can simply take your own gear, buy a permit and settle down for the day.
The lake is about 1.5 miles long and is close to Hill Top and is the home of Jeremy Fisher – the gentleman frog- who is one of Beatrix Potter’s most popular characters.
A small round pond at its head is known as ‘Priest’s Pot.
Additionally, the poet William Wordsworth mentions the lake in his poem ‘Prelude’.
